Rottenstone with mineral oil. Take a clean cotton towel, dip it in the mineral oil and then into the rottenstone. Cover stain with a circular motion. Depending on the depth of the stain, you may have to do this a couple times. Brush off the residue. This will not "remove" the stain - nothing will. What it does is disguise the stain. If you get down and look across the stained area with a raking light, you will be able to see the damage, but no one else will know.

Rottenstone can be procured at most hardware stores. If they don't have that tray precipiatated chalk or, believe it or not, cigarette ashes. This method works for minor scrathing as well.

Hi all,

Our museum uses some of its museum space as function space. Unfortunately,
we've had a recent accident with one of our quality pieces. A guest left a
sweating glass on our side buffet. Does anyone know of ways to work magic
(short of incantations) to remove the white "stain"? Our inventory lists
this piece in the following manner: "Carved mahogany and veneer Empire
Sideboard with rope-twisted front, candle stands on ends. The rectangular
top, 71 1/2 by 24 inches, (brasses replaced). American, c. 1840".

Thanks and happy holidays!
