The size of images in an exhibit should be determined by your interpretive
goal and by the gallery space available. If you want visitors to experience
the photographs as they would have in the 19th century (when enlargements
were seldom seen), then you should use contact prints (the same size as the
negatives). These work best in a smaller, more intimate gallery. If,
however, you want visitors to appreciate the images themselves (for the
information in them or for their artistic qualities), then the larger and
more varied the better. 11"x14" is a good place to start; 16"x20" gives
some variety; and a few 20"x24" or 30"x40" prints can create a dynamic
visual environment.
