PACKING & SHIPPING WORKSHOP

This four-day workshop will provide an overview of the principles involved
in the safe handling, packing, and transport of works of art and artifacts.
Emphasis will be placed on crate design, interior packing methods and
materials, and risk assessment in decision making with regard to packing 
and transport options.

The course will include both lecture and practicum sessions, and will cover:
1. Risk assessment, the decision making process when faced with preparing an object for transport, and the types of transportation issues to be addressed;    
2. Crate design and construction, including slat crates, one time shipment
crates, fully battened touring crates, and alternative methods for 
specialized crating problems;
3. Basic concepts for interior packing methods and materials for both 2-D
and 3-D objects;
4. Interior packing design techniques for specialized components such
asbracing, double boxing, packing frames, and multiple objects interiors;
5. Soft packing:  evaluation of decision making priorities, materials, 
methods, techniques, and transport options;
6. Hands-on practicum: scenarios and problem resolution.
Participants are encouraged to bring slides of packing problems for question and answer sessions and problem solving group discussion.
