David Vaisey, Bodley's Librarian at Oxford University, is returning to the
Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Library Lecture Series on Friday, March 15,
1996. This latest lecture will be on "Francis Douce, 1757-1834: A Great
Collector and His Collection," at 4:00 p.m. in the Hennage Auditorium at the
DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery.

According to Vaisey "Francis Douce was a difficult and prickly man but a
discerning connoisseur who having fallen out with his employer, The British
Museum, resigned in 1811. His devotion to his collections, his library and
his researches was eased when he inherited 50,000 pounds under the will of
the sculptor Joseph Nollekens in 1823. When he himself died he left his
library, his prints and drawings, his illuminated manuscripts and his coins
and medals to the Bodleian Library despite having visited it only once, in
1830." Always an entertaining speaker, David Vaisey will also show slides
from the Douce collection at the Bodleian Library.

Admission to the lecture is free of charge. Admission to the DeWitt Wallace
Decorative Arts Gallery, which is open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, is by
Good Neighbor Card, Patriot's Pass, Basic Plus Ticket or Museum Ticket. For
more information, please contact Liz Ackert at the Colonial Williamsburg
Foundation Library.
