Re benefits of programmes in science museums:

The 1992-published book of proceedings of a public understanding of science
conference at the Science Museum, London, had a section devoted to
"Educational and other programmes", including drama, schools programmes,
camp-ins and travelling exhibitions.

The book is called "Museums and the public understanding of science", ed
John Durant.

When you say "public programs as a _benefit_ to museums", what sort of
benefit do you have in mind?

Rebecca.
