The Gallery at the American Bible Society is pleased to announce the
availability of a unique exhibition of important religious art entitled
"Icons or Portraits? Images of Jesus and Mary Across Ten Centuries." The
exhibition examines the pervasive iconic representations of Christ and the
Madonna in art.

The exhibition focuses primarily on European sculpture and reliefs from the
early to late Renaissance and includes major artists such as Donatello and
Verrochio, as well as Moderno, Giambologna, Desidero da Settignano and
numerous masters from Italy, Germany, Spain and France. Consisting of 120
works in all mediums and from the 11th through early 20th century, the
exhibition is drawn from the Michael Hall Collection, which former National
Gallery Director J. Carter Brown has called, "one of the most impressive
private collections of sculpture and art in the world." The exhibition is
accompanied by a major catalogue documenting each work within a larger
historical and aesthetic context.
