A tangent to the marking polymers...I've been computer printing our numbers
on acid-free paper and adhering them to objects with the same base and top
coat used for the hand-written accession numbers. It improves greatly on
legibility, reversibility, and eliminates the vagaries of penmanship (6 and
b, 1 and 7, the occasional 3 that might be an 8 etc.) 6 point font can be
used for small things and still be very easy to read. On irregular
surfaces, I have had good luck manipulating the paper tag with my
fingernails to conform to the curve, angle etc before adhering. And of
course the color of the object does not matter, the labels shows well on any
background.
