Hi Carey,
What we tend to do (for our master copies) is store them vertically in their jewel cases, and number the outside of the cases. These are kept in climate controlled storage. As most of our images are of objects in the collection the file names are the registration numbers.
I use a program called "LS file list generator" to generate a list of the files on each CD which is imported into a spreadsheet along with the CD number. This seems to work pretty well for our purposes.

Working copies of the CDs are made and kept in the office area. Thumbnails are made from these images and kept on a shared drive.

LS can be found at http://home.a03.itscom.net/tsuzu/programing/en/

Regards,
Scott.

Subject: storing CD's

I started at a new museum recently and our digital
images that we have stored on CD's are in disaray. I
would like to organize the CD's but am unsure what the
most "standard" method of archiving CD's is. At the
last museum I worked at I organized the CD's in
binders and printed out contact sheets of the photos
stored on the CD's and put them in the binders with
the CD's. My current boss does not seem terribly
interested in that idea. Does anyone have any
fantastic advice regarding this issue?
Thanks in advance for any info.
