Exclusive to the online version is an article by Lucinda McKnight on a brave
new experiment in audience participation at the Immigration museum. The site
also features reviews of the Museum Victoria CD-ROM 'People, Places & Time'.

And for something a little different, Insite is now calling for stories of
ghosts that inhabit Victoria's museums and historic homes. These stories
will feature in the October issue of Insite, which will be a 'souvenir'
edition for broader circulation.

Why ghosts? On the eve of a bright new Melbourne Museum, it seems important
to acknowledge the world of the many smaller museums, many of which carry
irreplaceable historical baggage. Rather than deny the stereotype of museums
as dusty institutions, it seems better to exploit it. In the popular
imagination, ghosts are an enduring source of fascination and enjoyment.
Despite their kitsch status, ghost stories do also entice us to think about
previous generations, and to look around our world for their traces.

The 'Ghosts' project is thus designed to place museums in the chorus of
voices leading out the twentieth century. Join in the 'Auld lang syne', and
hunt around the basement for something a little strange.

The Insite web site has further details of 'Ghosts' project. Stories are
required by 15th August.

The theme for August Insite is 'navigation'.
