The Indiana Historical Society seeks candidates for the full-time
position of Conservation Technician II in the Conservation Department of
its Collections, Conservation, and Public Programs Division.

The Conservation Technician II provides support for Conservation's
preservation and conservation plan of the largely paper-based research
collections held by the IHS library. Duties include: Evaluating and
collection items and stabilizing same by providing custom housing such
as phase boxes, wrappers, and other protective enclosures; performing
basic paper conservation to archival collections such as surface
cleaning, washing, and mending; performing condition surveys and
entering survey data in database, assisting with environmental
monitoring and managing photographic documentation of collections
borrowed for exhibitions, managing preservation supply inventory,
assisting with examination of in-coming collections, participating in
disaster response operations. A complete job description is available

Candidates must have demonstrated experience of refined manual
dexterity, excellent hand and eye coordination and precision hand skills
as well as ability to safely handle fragile paper-based special
collection materials and work with care, deliberation, and neatness.
Candidates must also be able to work independently as well as in a team
environment and coordinate workflow, have analytical problem-solving
skills, and be detail-oriented. Preferred candidates will have formal or
on-the-job training performing limited conservation treatment in a
recognized treatment facility, a familiarity with characteristics of
paper, archival supplies, and their use in a paper conservation lab or
collection setting. Physical dexterity and strength enough to operate
heavy board shear is also required, as is a willingness to learn to
provide custom housings and cradles with appropriate training. Working
knowledge of word processing and database management software is also a
must.

Required:
1. Bachelor's degree in arts or sciences, preferably with a major that
is materials based, i.e., studio art, archeology, or material culture.
2. Minimum of one year's experience in conservation lab related area
with basic knowledge of collections conservation and essential knowledge
of the field.

Preferred:
1. Experience performing minor treatments to paper based materials or
books in a professional setting.

Salary range starts in the mid-$20's; salary offered will be
commensurate with experience and skills. The IHS offers an excellent
