The Upstate History Alliance is excited to begin accepting  
registrations for our upcoming online courses, including four newly  
developed mini-courses! Details are listed below and at

Online Learning Communities - Collections Management 101

Collections Management 101 is designed for staff and volunteers at  
small and mid-size organizations.  Course materials are designed to  
help you focus on your own organization, with assignments relating to  
real-life issues and problems. Topics to be covered over a twelve  
week period include:

     • Mission & Ethics
     • Accreditation
     • Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act
     • Collections Managment Policies
     • Disaster Plans
     • Collecting Plans
     • Deaccessioning
     • Reproduction Rights
     • Accessioning
     • Registration
     • Security
     • Storage
     • Preventive Conservation Measures

The course will begin with an introductory week on October 29, 2007  
with formal instruction beginning on November 5th. This year, we will  
take a break 6 weeks into the course in mid December and will resume  
for the remaining 6 weeks January 7th. The course concludes on

Online Learning Communities - Mini Courses

Basic Preservation, Care & Handling of Paper Based Materials
October 22- November 11, 2007
Curriculum developed by Michele Phillips

This 4-week online course will provide an introduction to the factors  
effecting the preservation and care of paper-based materials.  
Building on this knowledge, participants will then learn about  
appropriate techniques for handling and storing collection materials  
and recommended sources for supplies. Instruction in basic  
conservation techniques for surface cleaning and mending paper-based  
materials will be provided.

Climate Control for Small Institutions
November 19-December 14, 2007
Curriculum developed by the Patricia Ford

This 4-week online course will allow participants to explore the  
issues that need to be considered when planning for climate controls  
including monitoring, testing, environmental analysis assessments,  
long-range planning, systems design, construction support, and  
operations training. Low cost-low tech solutions will be offered and  
discussed, providing participants with the background knowledge to  
assist them in making informed decisions that can be implemented at  
their own institutions.

Conservation & Preservation of Photographs and Albums
January 7-February 1, 2008
Curriculum developed by Gary Albright

This 4-week online course will first provide an overview of factors  
effecting the preservation and care of photographs. The various  
photographic processes will be reviewed and techniques for  
identifying each photographic process will be supplied. Appropriate  
handling and storage materials, as well as sources for supplies will  
be covered. The course will also address the issue of when the  
original format or album format can be maintained or when re-housing  
should be considered.

Introduction to Reformatting
February 18-March 14, 2008
Curriculum developed by Toya Dubin

This 4-week online course will provide participants with current,  
essential information for those who are responsible for the  
management of paper-based, photographic, audio, and video collections  
that are seeking to create, manage, and preserve digital assets.  
Participants completing this course will be better equipped to make  
informed choices regarding management of their digital projects/ 
programs.

The cost to participate in a 4-week online course is $25 for UHA  
members, $40 for non-members. Or you can sign up to participate in a  
series of all four, beginning with Basic Care of Paper on October 22,  
2007 and ending with Introduction to Reformatting which begins on  
February 18th, 2007. The cost to participate in the complete series  
is $90 for UHA members, $150 for non-members.
