I think you bring up some very interesting points here and could open up
a good discussion. The reference you make about the letter, IMHO, I
think is all right and perhaps on two points. Artistically speaking, it
is a good opening line for the film--something simple but packed with
meaning like 'These are the times that try men's souls." Yet as I type
that line I question myself,  is it 'souls' or is it 'hearts' and was it
Thomas Paine and so on because I am accessing memory and recollection.
The writer of the letter written in 1862 could be reflecting back to an
event the year before and seeing it in a more objective way being
removed from it through time having gained in experience and
perspective. I realize that it could be an inaccuracy--that it is
something that happened in 1862 around the time of the writing and in
this case I still see it as permissible.
