One of our most popular historic sites is Duke Homestead and Tobacco Museum,
and tobacco companies have been very generous with money and donations of
artifacts. The site features the home of Washington Duke and his first and
third tobacco companies. Duke's company, W. Duke, Sons & Company, went on
to form a tobacco monopoly known as The American Tobacco Company. In 1911,
the company was forced by the US Justice Department to split into five major
companies. Washington Duke also endowed a small college (Trinity College),
moved it to Durham, and we all know it today as Duke University.

Tobacco companies have been large supporters of the arts and humanities.
Yes, their products have caused serious illnesses and death, but then, so
have automobiles and trucks. Like them or not, they are part of our
American culture and should not be swept under the rug.

Personally and professionally, I find the history of tobacco manufacture and
advertising to be fascinating. Apparently so do our thousands of visitors.

My site has a strict policy of not accepting any money from tobacco
companies or unethical companies in general. In fact, I would really
think twice about patronising a museum that did. Sorry.
