          SOLINET, Inc., The Southeastern Library Network, is pleased to
          introduce our Fall 1999 preservation workshop schedule:


          ******BEATING THE CRITTER JITTERS: INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT*******
          This workshop will be held Tuesday, October 26 at the University of
          South Florida, Tampa, FL from 9 AM - 4 PM.

          This full-day session explains and assesses the available strategies
          for preventing and combating pest problems. Participants will learn
          to identify common pests, recognize the damage various pests cause to
          library and archival materials, and develop strategies for
          implementing an integrated pest management program of monitoring and
          control. The instructor is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director, Chicora
          Foundation.

          Cost is $85 for SOLINET members ($75 early bird, $110 late
          registration); $125 Non-SOLINET & FEDLINK ($115 early bird, $150 late
          registration). Any institution within Florida qualifies for the
          member rate. Members of the Tampa Bay Library Consortium may use
          their training vouchers by listing TBLC's OCLC symbol.


          ***************DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND RECOVERY*******************
          This 1 & 1/2 day workshop is scheduled for Thursday - Friday,
          November 4-5, 1999 from 9am - 4pm Day 1 and 9am-12pm Day 2 at
          Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA.

          Libraries and archives are vulnerable to a variety of disasters
          ranging from fires and flooding to roof leaks and mold outbreaks.
          Through lecture, group exercises and demonstrations, this one and a
          half-day workshop will provide the training necessary to plan,
          organize and execute a disaster plan and salvage operation.

          Ruth Pierce, Consultant, Mississippi Library Commission and Elaine
          Smyth, Rare Books Curator, Louisiana State University are the
          instructors.

          Cost is $135 SOLINET members ($125 early bird, $160 late
          registration); $175 Non-SOLINET members and FEDLINK ($165 early bird,
          $200 late registration). Any institution within Louisiana qualifies
          for the member rate.


          ***********ARCHIVES PRESERVATION: HOLDINGS MAINTENANCE*********
          Monday, November 15 from 9 AM to 4 PM at the State Library of
          Tennessee, Nashville, TN.

          Holding Maintenance, the basic preservation procedures incorporated
          into arrangement and description duties, is recognized as a
          fundamental component of archives preservation. This one-day workshop
          outlines the major activities and goals of a holdings maintenance
          program.  The focus is on stabilizing materials through preventive
          activities such as removing damaging fasteners, re-housing and
          encapsulation. Instructors for this session are Christine Wiseman,
          Preservation Education Officer, and Tina Mason, Field Service Officer.

          Cost is $95 for SOLINET members ($85 early bird, $120 late
          registration); $135 Non-SOLINET & FEDLINK ($125 early bird, $160 late
          registration).

          NOTE: Register for HOLDINGS MAINTENANCE and PRESERVATION MANAGEMENT OF
          AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTIONS and receive a $35 discount! Total cost for
          both sessions as follows: $155 SOLINET members, $145 early bird, and

          ********PRESERVATION MANAGEMENT OF AUDIOVISUAL COLLECTIONS********
          This one-day session will be held Tuesday, November 16 at the State
          Library of Tennessee, Nashville, TN from 9 AM - 4 PM.

          This session will concentrate on the principles and practices of
          managing equipment-dependent magnetic media, motion picture film, and
          mechanical sound recording collections. Topics include:

          *  What do conservation, preservation, and restoration mean?
          *  What "drives" preservation activities for sight and sound
             recordings?
          *  Appraisal considerations
          *  Guidelines for care, handling and storage
          *  And much more

          Attendees are invited to bring in equipment and/or recording media for
          discussion and identification during the session.

          Instructor of the session is Alan Lewis, Audiovisual Preservation
          Expert in the Special Media Archives Services Division, National
          Archives and records Administration..


          Cost is $95 for SOLINET members ($85 early bird, $120 late
          registration); $135 Non-SOLINET & FEDLINK ($125 early bird, $160 late
          registration).

          ****************DEALING WITH DISASTERS IN MUSEUMS****************
          This NEW one-day Preservation session will be held on Friday, Dec.
          3 at The Mariner Museum, Newport News, VA.

          Museums are vulnerable to a variety of disasters, i.e., fire, smoke,
          flooding. To prevent unnecessary loss of materials museum staff must
          be prepared to handle both minor and large scale emergencies by having
          knowledgeable staff and written plans for dealing with emergency
          situations. In this session museum and archival staff will learn the
          essential components of a disaster plan, learn salvage techniques for
          a variety of materials, and develop an understanding of health and
          safety concerns after a disaster.

          Instructor for this workshop is Dr. Michael Trinkley, Director,
          Chicora Foundation.

          Cost is $95 for SOLINET members ($85 early bird, $120 late
          registration); $135 Non-SOLINET & FEDLINK ($125 early bird, $160 late
          registration). Any institution in Virginia qualifies for the member
          rate.
