As the former executive director of the Museum Trustee Association (MTA), I
recommend that you should contact this international association headquartered
in Washington DC. Its mission is to address the unique needs of museum
trustees. You will find it to be an excellent resource for directors and
board members. You know from your own experience how helpful it is to keep
current in your field, so why not invest in ongoing educational opportunities
for your museum's highest volunteers: its trustees. The MTA has the programs,
trustee-to-trustee workshops, and conferences to help trustees understand
their stewardship roles and effectively work with their director to benefit
the museum. It also has a clearinghouse for museum trustee
resources/publications. In short, it's the only group of its kind designed
for museum trustees by museum trustees. The association's annual conference
is scheduled for October 5-7 in San Antonio, TX. Call the MTA office (202)
857-1180 M-F 9am-5pm EDT for more information on this and other options.
Membership is based on the museum's annual operating budget (the first year is
half-price too!) Good luck!
