Not sure if this will work for you but when we here at Hagley encountered the same
problem with our historic house Eleutherian Mills, we installed lighting intside
fireplaces.  The fixtures are high enough that they aren't visible to visitors.  It does
a really good job of adding light especially on rainy days.
