Having worked as a retail clerk at a bakery/cafe taught me a lot about the
benefits of good customer service (for the company and the customer) and
about keeping my cool with belligerent customers.  I also learned a lot
about people and being aware of their needs.  I've found that all of this
transfers over to serving visitors at our museum.
