The deadline for applications for Director of the Watkins Community Museum
of History has been extended to 20 December 2002. Details of the job and the
application process are below.

Director
The Watkins Community Museum of History

        The Douglas County Historical Society, Lawrence, Kansas, invites
applications for the position of Director, Watkins Community Museum of
History.
The Watkins Community Museum of History acquires, manages and interprets
collections pertaining to the history of Douglas County with particular
emphasis on the noteworthy 19th and early 20th century historical resources
of the county. The museum seeks collaborative partnerships with regional
organizations and institutions that share a major interest in and concern
for the historical heritage of the county and its educational and economic

        Candidates must have excellent leadership skills, a record of
achievement in the museum world, proven administrative skills, and a
commitment to innovation and excellence in the acquisition, management,
related research, and interpretation of collections. The incumbent will be
expected to foster collaborative relationships with relevant organizations
in the county and state to publicize and enhance the historic resources of
Douglas County.

        Successful candidates will have (1) a graduate degree from a museum
studies program; (2) a minimum of three years experience as a director of or
administrator in a museum that reports to a fiduciary board of
directors/trustees; (3) familiarity with museum-relevant software; (4)
excellent oral and written communication skills; (5) proven abilities in
development and organization of membership and fund-raising programs; (6)
demonstrable skills in preparation of grant proposals.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The society wishes to fill the position by January 15, 2003 or as soon
thereafter as possible. Submit two (2) copies each of curriculum vitae,
brief summary of personal museum management philosophy, and three letters of
recommendation to Philip S. Humphrey, Chairman, Search Committee, 1609
