In a letter to the New York Times several  years ago one writer noted that
Andrew Carnege's great gift to this nation was the free library system.
America grew and prospered, in part, because, anyone could improve his
education and position through the free access to knowledge and
information.

The author went on to suggest that what America of  the 1990s needs is
another Andrew Carnege, i.e. someone who will fund free access to
information in this on-line age.
