I am from Minnetrista, a Museum in Muncie, Indiana. We have a
Collections Staff and a Programs staff. We are separate entities within
the institution. BUT, that's not to say that we don't collaborate.

When we're looking at creating exhibits, whether they're small displays
for atrium cases or in-house gallery exhibits that would include pieces
from our Collection archives, we work together in committees. Jointly we
discuss which pieces are most appropriate, how they'd be handled while
putting the exhibit together, and then how they would be protected for
the duration of the display or exhibit.

Our Visitor Services Manager (person who oversees Interpretation, among
other things) meets with our Collections staff frequently, and she often
brings back information to the rest of programming staff that helps us
to understand how the gallery or display can or will be used, and some
of the concerns to be aware of regarding the particular pieces. We also
have an historical home on our property, and this same collaborative
effort helps us understand the different perceptions of the home, as
well as the archive pieces, and helps to remind all of us of the needs
each department has.

This allows for effective educational programming, positive and accurate
interpretive experiences for our guests, without compromising the
integrity or longevity of the historical pieces and/or home.

Hope this is of some value to you.

Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Education Committee

Our Education program falls under the purview of the Programs &
Exhibitions Committee. This committee establishes policy for education

activities and the exhibitions program. And, briefly, approves
traveling exhibitions, monitors education programming, and reviews and
makes recommendations re: proposed publications.
