From my experience, successful fundraising methods are different for every museum/organization (i.e., a tea works well for one group and a golf tournament for another).  Most crucial is that the activity meets the needs of its funders--which could be philanthropic (doing something
good for the community) but it could also be driven by social needs (meeting friends), doing some special (uniqueness), or economic (business promotion or meeting clients).

Some books that explore this further are Henry Russo's "Achieving Excellence in Fundraising" or Alvin Reiss' "Don't Just Applaud--Send Money!".
