Department of Cultural Services 
 
Position Summary: 
- Work as part of a team and responsible for overseeing the civic collection and the City-owned museums as well as taking a lead role in interpreting the history and contents of Kingston City Hall National Historic Site. 
- Develop a range of exhibits, programs, sites and services that are accurate, authentic, relevant and inclusive and tell the Kingston story in all its complexity. 
- Support the realization of Cultural Services' mandate on an annual basis by developing work plans that align with broader goals and objectives. 
- Manage budgets and deploy available resources to ensure both efficiencies and optimal service delivery in connection with the areas defined. 
- Set and improve service delivery standards and models in accordance with departmental plans, corporate policies and professional standards and practices as it relates to collections, museums and heritage (both tangible and intangible). 
- Build and nurture relationships, involving staff, volunteers, and external stakeholders, to achieve departmental plans, fulfill corporate goals and objectives, and to support local museums, museum professionals, heritage organizations and cultural groups to ensure their relevance, sustainability and overall success. 
- Manage & supervise staff and volunteers and foster a work environment that is creative and productive to support the long-term development of Cultural Services. 
- Responsible for supervising Health and Safety and for creating a work environment that nurtures well being and respect for staff, stakeholders and partners within the community. 
- Support innovation internally and help to manage change as it impacts staff as well as stakeholders, community partners and Kingston residents. 
- Pursue research initiatives that help to expand the collective understanding of Kingston's cultural Kingston's history and communicate that understanding through different means. 
- Ensure the work of Cultural Services acknowledges Kingston's cultural diversity and that all exhibits, programs, sites and services are inclusive. 
- Promote broad-based community engagement, professionalism and self-reliance. 
- Support creativity, strategic partnerships and growth among local museums, museum professionals, heritage organizations and cultural groups. 

Qualifications, Competencies:
- Masters Degree in History, Public History, Cultural Studies and Museum Studies with five years experience in museum-related programming and management and/or heritage development. 
- Completion of four-year undergraduate degree with eight years related experience would also be considered. 
- Related experience should involve historical research, exhibit development, museum programming, strategic planning, museum and heritage granting programs and/or community cultural development, coordinating and supervising staff and volunteers, and experience with budgeting, facilities management and coordinator capital projects. 
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of museum and heritage interpretation and educational techniques is needed. 
- Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity, and Teamwork. 

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands:
- Leadership abilities, superior communication skills, creative thinking and sound decision making skills. 
- Advanced analytical, research and consultation skills. 
- Ability to multitask and manage a diversity of projects, priorities and timelines. 
- Sound knowledge of collections management, conservation and disaster recovery planning methods and techniques. 
- Determined advocate for museums, heritage and community cultural development respectful of cultural diversity and supportive of broad-based inclusion. 
- Familiar with the historical and contemporary development of the City of Kingston. 
- Working knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal government acts and legislation. 
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. 
- Proficient computers skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and with collections management software. 
- Must have own transportation and a valid "G" class drivers license. 
- French or other languages considered an asset.
