DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF CENTRAL FLORIDA

THE POSITION

The Director of Development will plan, develop and implement a 
comprehensive development program designed to position and advance the 
mission and values of the Historical Society of Central Florida, home of 
the Orange County Regional History Center in Orlando, Florida. As the 
Organization’s chief fundraising officer, the Director is charged with 
designing and implementing a complete fundraising program, including the 
establishment of a planned giving and endowment program. Other 
responsibilities include: identification, cultivation and solicitation of 
individual major gift, corporate sponsorship and foundation grant 
prospects; creation of fundraising policies and procedures for the 
Organization, ensuring compliance with all professional and charitable 
ethical standards; and management of the development office’s financial 
reporting. S/he will research, cultivate and maximize external funding to 
underwrite Board identified Organizational priorities.

The Director will also refine the current sponsor recognition program, 
while developing an annual sponsor support prospectus. S/he will work 
closely with the Executive Director to ensure open communication, and 
support the Development Committee of the Board of Directors. Of major 
importance is the need to establish a database and associated procedures 
to assure the effective identification of prospects, track contributions 
and produce timely acknowledgements. The Director will report to the 
Executive Director. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Manage a talented staff of two in the development office and interns and 
volunteers as necessary
* Direct all aspects of the Society’s development activities including 
annual gala, special exhibition openings, and signature golf tournament.
* Strengthen existing and build new relationships with the Society’s 
supporters.
* Develop multi-year and annual development plan for the Society, in 
conjunction with the Board Development Committee. Monitor progress and 
revise plans as needed on an annual basis.
* Create, plan and implement a comprehensive fundraising program, which 
will include corporate solicitation, individual and annual giving, major 
gifts, planned giving, grants from government agencies and grant making 
foundations, endowment giving, and in-kind contributions.
* Create and implement fundraising strategies to meet identified goals in 
each fundraising area.
* Develop fundraising policies and procedures for the Society, ensuring 
compliance with all professional and charitable ethical standards.
* Write proposals, solicitation and campaign materials, committee reports, 
and responsible for all correspondence related to development activities.
* Responsible for development of an annual sponsor support prospectus.
* Establish databases and procedures to a) assure the effective 
identification of prospects; b) track contributions by project, by donor 
and by solicitation source; c) produce timely and innovative 
acknowledgements; and d) create reports. 
* Expected to work in partnership with Executive Director and the Board of 
Directors to ensure open communication and collaborations with the staff 
and leadership of the Society.
* Execute other projects as assigned by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will possess:

* 3-5 Years+ of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising;
* A demonstrable track record in building strong donor relationships and 
programs; 
* Exceptional interpersonal, written and presentation skills;
* A high degree of initiative and energy, with a high level of 
professionalism and integrity;
* Ability to be a flexible team player and manage numerous tasks 
simultaneously;
* Capability and willingness to travel and work weekends as necessary;
* Good computer and database skills; Knowledge of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge 
preferred
* A Bachelor’s degree.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time salaried position with benefits.  Compensation will be 
commensurate with experience and record of successful achievement.  This
