Announcing Position Opening: Education Coordinator
at The Thomas Cole National Historic Site.   Recruitment Taking Place
April - June 2009

Overview: The Education Coordinator is responsible for all activities
relating to volunteer needs for the organization, and manages the
docent program including planning, recruitment, training, monitoring,
scheduling and recognition.  The purpose of the docent program is to
provide the most meaningful interpretive experience to over 8,500
visitors annually through guided tours and public programs. The
position requires weekend work and reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:
*	Recruits, trains, mentors and coordinates docents to lead guided
tours of the historic site, and schedules other volunteers for other
site needs such as special events;
*	Plans and conducts ongoing docent training and enrichment program
and maintains supporting materials including the docent manual;
*	Schedules docents for daily and special tours and ensures that all
slots on the schedule are staffed with docents; finds replacements for
last-minute cancellations, etc.;
*	Maintains a contact list of volunteers and keeps records of docent
interests and availability;
*	Opens the Visitor Center and the Main House each weekend morning,
ensures that the Visitor Center staff and volunteers have what they
need for the day, and closes the site in the evening;
*	Conducts research for material that can be used to improve the tour
experience for visitors, and works with the Executive Director to
continually improve the tour;
*	Oversees educational programs and tours for school children,
schedules school group visits, and continually evaluates and improves
programs for children and families at the historic site;
*	Recruits and trains guides to lead hikes on the Hudson River School
Art Trail. Ensures the delivery of a high quality guided hike

*	Assists with coordination and set-up of equipment for educational
programs for the public such as Sunday Salons, symposia, and other
lectures and events;
*	Assists Executive Director with other areas of museum management
such as curatorial and registrar work, exhibition planning and
coordination, and/or research and writing, depending on the skills and
experience of the candidate.

Hours and compensation: Hours for the position are four days per week
at minimum, and possibly full time, depending on the needs of the
historic site and the availability of the candidate. Compensation will
depend on the candidate's skills and experience. Housing and health
benefits may be available as part of the total compensation package.
During May-October, when the site is open for walk-in tours, the
minimum hours will be Thursday through Sunday, 9am to 5pm. During
November-April, the hours will change to weekdays.

Qualifications: An undergraduate degree is required, and a graduate
degree in art history, history, museum management, or a related field
is preferred. The successful candidate will be highly organized and
efficient while also possessing excellent interpersonal skills and an
outgoing personality in order to maintain joyful relationships with
volunteers. The position requires the ability to enforce policies with
a smile, and to think creatively about how to solve problems under
pressure. The candidate must be able to maintain a flexible schedule
with some evening work. The position requires moderate physical
activity including climbing stairs and moving about the historic site
in hot summers and cool spring and fall weather.
