Katherine Jones-Garmil,
I have a couple of suggestions for tracking down the photographer
Stoddard.
1. The George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography
and Film has a database of photographers (the GEH Bio File for
short). There are 10 Stoddards listed, but William N. appears to
be the only one from the 1860s. He was active in Chicago 1859-64,
in partnership with Simond 1859-60. The GEH and the Visual
Studies Workshop, both in Rochester, NY, report modest holdings
by him.
2. Ross J. Kelbaugh has published several volumes titled:
_Directory of Civil War Photographers_, available at Historic
Graphics, 7023 Deerfield Road, Baltimore, MD 21208. Ross may
have an e-mail address, but I don't have it.
3. There are many people compiling state directories of
photographers [my commercial pitch: I am seeking any and all
information on Indiana photographers, 1840-1920]. If you could
provide me with Stoddard's full name and locations worked, I
would be glad to pass along the information to other directory
compilers.

Hope this helps--cheers!
