Hello,

My question to throw out to the list is concerning open air museums.

Do you feel that the village setting adds to the visitor experience of
nostalgia and suspension of time, because it is inherently understood and
most every visitor can relate to the concept, OR does it relax the visitor
into a mode of absorbtion, in which they don't differenciate between
buildings?

I am working in an open-air museum that has recently gone through a
significant renovation and has created two distint approaches in the
village. There was little changed about the houses, keeping their
landscaping and way-finding modernized, but still fitting into
the "neighborhood" feeling. However, the craft areas have been modernized
to a commercial standard; quaint, almost like a downtown street with
cobbles and a man-made pond with fountains in it. There is an immediate
change of feeling when walking from one to the other and I am wondering if
it makes the visitor uncomfortable, as it does me?

Cheers, Jan
