 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THE NEW YORK STATE 
OFFICE OF PARKS, RECREATION AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION

TITLE:  Curator I	Grade:  18	Neg. Unit:  PS & T

JURISDICTIONAL CLASS:	Competitive

TYPE OF POSITION:	Provisional

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation
(OPRHP) is presently accepting applications with its Bureau of Historic
Sites located at the Peebles Island Resource Center in Waterford, New
York.

Minimum Qualifications:  B.A. in one of the Humanities (e.g. history,
literature, art, art history, philosophy, American studies, political
science, museum studies) and three years experience working in a
professional capacity with collections in a history museum, a general
museum with history collections, or a historic site; an M.A. in American
Studies, Art History, History, History of Technology, Museum Studies, or
Public History may be substituted for one year of experience.

Illustrative Duties:  research and analysis of historic collections
owned by the OPRHP's 35 state historic sites and 5 state historic parks
towards the management and interpretation of these collections for the
public; the analysis of historic collections within the context of New
York State history typically results in the production of exhibit
scripts, historic furnishings reports, surveys, research reports, and
the evaluation of collections for acquisition, loans, exhibits,
deaccessioning, and curation of conservation treatments.

Applicants must be detail-oriented and focused, comfortable working as
part of an interdisciplinary team, and willing to work simultaneously on
multiple tasks.  Strong oral and written communication skills are
essential.  Computer literacy and familiarity with word processing are
required. Familiarity with database and PowerPoint programs is
desirable.  The successful candidate must possess a valid driver's
license.

This is a New York State Civil Service position starting at $44,313 with
annual performance increases up to $55,154 with an excellent benefits
package.  The candidate selected will be appointed "provisionally"
pending a future examination, but we anticipate that this will be a
long-term appointment.
