The List keeps rejecting my original postings, so I'll try this:
I wrote
"Simply put, the inescapable fact is that - at least now - the
image capture capability of digitization is inferior to that of
film. Consider, FTSOA, only _resolution_: compare the grain
structure of a film frame with that of a CCD (charge-coupled
device) array. The film grain structure is much finer. I can
give some comparative numbers, if anyone wishes them. And there
are other image capture inferiorities [i.e., tonal range]. My
concern is that there will be many, their eyes glazed over by the
gee-whiz of technology ("All the other kids are doing it"), who
will mistake an image scanned for some other totally different
purpose, e.g., the Web fad, for an image suitable for
preservation reformatting. Not so: Too bad."
