Ahhh! The uniform dilema.  We have just finished writing our uniform code
at the Fire Museum of Maryland.  There had been some discussion for awhile
about what volunteers and staff should wear.  At one time (before my time)
staff were required to wear dark blue polyester slacks / trousers and a
blue polyester shirt.  This was when the museum was first founded and what
fire fighters wore in the way of a uniform.  Then as time past some staff /
volunteers requested exemptions.  (Gee, I wonder why?).

When an order of cotton knit polo shirts, embroidered with a colorful
steamer, pulled by galloping percherons and name of the museum embroidered
below the steamer, many of the staff jumped at buying them.  They became
the unofficial uniform for those of us who give school and group tours.  We
could wear shorts, pants, shirt or skort.  This gave us a child friendly
appearance.  Many of the children thought the staff wearing the blue shirt
and trousers were police officers.  Also the polyester shirt is really hot
in the summer and this museum has no a/c.  Sorry folks, there is nothing
professional looking about sweat rings.

Then this summer one of the temporary floor staff wore shorts that were to
say a little too short, as well as a little too tight.  Which, brings me
back to the beginning.  A uniform dress code needed to be written.  Some
people just don't know how to dress.  So, the uniform is -- white knit polo
shirt or blue polyester shirt with dark (no longer need to be polyester)
blue pants, shirt or skort, hose or white socks with black shoes.
Something for the traditionalist and the let's move forward and be friendly
looking types.
