Our insurance is through our parent organization and they maneuvered  
this process by creating a "top 50" rather than assessing each and  
every object in our collection.  We have a smaller collection than you  
but doing a "top" # list (as heart-wrenching as it is) and providing  
that to an insurance agency may be a good idea and help keep costs  
lower. I would also make sure the insurance agency that you choose has  
experience with other cultural organizations in insuring collections.
