We develop an extensive website for the State Capitol Museum of California
http://www.capitolmuseum.ca.gov/ that is designed to meet the needs you
describe. The 4th and 8th grade curricula in California are about history
and government and the museum is inundated with school groups. The website
supports the curricula in several ways: it provides information that can be
used before and after in-person visits; virtual tours that can serve in lieu
of an in-person visit since not all schools can get to the Museum; and there
is also a Teachers' Resources page that provides high level ideas about how
to use the site as well as links to other resources with more details. Two
such links are also worth your checking out since they provide the detailed
lesson plans and such the Museum develops. That sites are at
http://www.ports.parks.ca.gov/ and
http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=1036

The website is continually being expanded. For example we recently added a
Multimedia Library section that includes a timeline, bringing more depth to
the materials. We are also in the midst of creating an Art & Architecture
Virtual Tour.
