Let me also add two more titles to my previous response on nonprofit
management books: Thomas A. McLaughlin's __Nonprofit Mergers & Alliances:
A Strategic Planning Guide__ (1998) and David La Piana's __Nonprofit
Mergers: The Board's Responsibility to Consider the Unthinkable__ (1994).
McLaughlin's book also comes with a computer disk to create forms,
checklists, agreement templates, etc. --Amy

Amy,

Just in case you haven't already seen them, there's a few recent books on
nonprofit mergers. They focus on social services, like you say, but they try
to make some broader points as well. One I haven't seen yet, but that seems
promising, is by the Aspen group. According to a review I read, one of the
book's more surprising messages is that nonprofit mergers usually do NOT end
up saving much money.

Anyway, if you do a search at Amazon for "nonprofit merger" you'll see a
bunch of titles on this topic. (And then you can go order them through your
favorite locally-owned bookseller.) I hope you'll keep the world posted on
your findings!

Cheers,

I can quickly think of two cases where a "Pioneer" organization "merged"
with a historical organization, other cases where an organization has
"folded" but given their collection to another organization. These were
more than five years ago. If you're interested in these please email me at
