Curatorial Internship

The Huguenot Historical Society is offering two ten-week curatorial
internships for the Summer of 2004. The internships will involve
inventorying and cataloguing a collection of domestic textiles and clothing
items belonging to members of the Levi Hasbrouck family household; residents
of Locust Lawn, a 19th century farm complex built for Levi’s father, Col.
Josiah Hasbrouck in c.1814.

Under the supervision of the HHS curator, interns will begin the project by
inventorying and cataloguing a group of household textiles to include
quilts, coverlets and bed linens. Data will be entered into a Microsoft
Access database. Additionally, all objects will be digitally photographed.
Selected domestic textiles will be moved to the Huguenot Historical Society’
s Collections Storage facility in New Paltz (approximately three miles north
of Locust Lawn) for re-housing. Following domestic textiles, a selection of
historic clothing and accessories - many from the mid 19th century – will be
inventoried, catalogued and photographed. All data will be entered into the
computer. Clothing and accessories will also be prepared for re-housing to
include padding out and boxing.

The Huguenot Historical Society, founded in 1894, owns and maintains eight
historic house sites and adjoining support structures with construction
dates ranging from the late 17th century to 1894. Its buildings and
collections reflect 300 years of social and family history pertaining
primarily to the early Huguenot families who settled New Paltz and their
descendants. The house museums are furnished with period pieces – many with
traceable family provenance. The Society also maintains a reproduction 1717
stone church, a library and an archives containing family papers, wills,
early books and photographs.

Requirements: Candidates should be enrolled in a degree granting graduate
program in Museum Studies or related field. Applicants should be familiar
with basic cataloguing and handling procedures for museum objects.
Background in textile identification and terminology would be helpful but is
not a requirement. Computer experience is required.

Each internship carries a stipend of $2,000 (taxable). A modest traveling
budget will be provided. Living accommodations are available. Applicants
should submit a resume and letter of intent to:
