>[log in to unmask] asks:

Are there reference materials available containing period terminology of
what was then the common name of substances, giving 20th century chemical
names?<

I have a book that may be of interest for terminology, dating from 1890
entitled

"Selecta e(accent grave) Praescriptis - Selections for Physicians'
Prescriptions Containing Lists of the Terms, Phrases, Contractions, and
Abbreviations Used in Prescriptions, with Explanatory Notes; the
Grammatical Construction of Prescriptions; Rules for the Pronunciation of
Pharmaceutical Terms; a Prosodiacal Vocabulary of the Names of Drugs, etc.;
and a Series of Abbreviated Prescriptions Illustrating the Preceding Terms
- To which is added A Key containing the Prescriptions in an Unabbreviated
Form, with a Literal Translation; For the Use of Medical and Pharmaceutical
Students"

by Jonathan Pereira, M.D., F.R.S, 18th Ed., London: J. and A. Churchill, 11
Burlington Street, 1890. 3 in. x 5 in., 364 pp., indexed (7 pp.)

I have no idea if this is rare or hard to get a hold of. It is the 18th
edition so I suspect there must be lots of them around. Let me know if you
are interested.

There is also the Pamphlet

Jon Eklund, "The Incompleat Chymist - Being an Essay on the
Eighteenth-Century Chemist in His Laboratory, with a Dictionary of Obsolete
Chemical Terms of the Period", Smithsonian Studies in History and
Technology, Number 33, 1975 (Washington DC: Smithsonian University Press)
with a bibliography containing 200 entries.
