Kate,
Are you going to be putting this information into a computer database like
PastPerfect?  If you are, there is (at least in PastPerfect) the space for
the main object name and then a space for other name.  I would think you
could enter its name based on how it was used (since that is the important
part to you) and then in the "other name" field you could enter the name
of it if it had been used for its original purpose.  Do you have other
objects in your collections with the same or a similar issue?  If you only
have physical records, I would probably do it a similar way.  The
important thing is to be consistant if you have other objects with similar
object name questions.
