Hi, Merri--As Celia pointed out, much art historical theory has been written by
German scholars, so proficiency in German will stand you in good stead.

For a Ph.D., you'll need at least two languages, usually either French or
Italian, which you can select according to your field of concentration. Most
programs require you to pass exams in both languages before you begin writing
your thesis or dissertation, so it's a good idea to start studying now.

All best,
Christian
