I don't live in the DC area, but recently pursued a job there.  After
consulting with some friends in that area, it was determined that the best
bet for affordable housing was outlying areas like Fredrick and Hagerstown
Md, or even Harpers Ferry WV.  Yes, that's something of a commute, but these
friends of mine all pay right at or even below 500 a month, in nice areas,
without several room mates.  Also, it's my understanding (and from personal
experience getting lost in DC), using the metro is not only affordable but
good for your sanity :)
