Overseas printing

Because of skyrocketing printing costs, our publications department is
searching for ways to cut costs while maintaining the high quality of our
books and publications. One avenue we would like to seriously explore is
overseas printing—Hong Kong, China, Japan, Italy, etc. Does anybody have
any experiences they can share with me about this process? I am interested
in knowing such things as:
 1. Size of book (page count) and print run.
 2. Approximate number of color images. Were digital images and
float proofs supplied by you to the printer, or was the printer responsible
for the scanning? If the printer was responsible, what was the cost per
scan/float proof and digital alterations?
 3. The amount of lead-time needed for production. Was it
difficult to make alterations?
 4. Did you deal with the printer directly or use a print broker?
Who did you use?
 5. What was the final cost for printing? (Important)
 6. Shipping times, cost, and issues.
 7. What types of problems, if any, did you encounter with the
process?
 8. Were you satisfied with the final product?

I appreciate any and all information you are able to volunteer. Feel free
to e-mail me directly, if you prefer.
