Electronic and Multimedia Publishing in Museums and Art Galleries

Multimedia and the Millennium

(Joint meeting with the Museum Documentation Association
and the Museum Trading and Publishing Group)
Thursday 6 November 1997

9.30 a.m. for 10.00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies Russell Square,
London WC1

Today, shaking off their image of dusty places with static displays of
exhibits, many museums and art galleries are now regarded as the
exciting front runners in producing multimedia presentations, both on CD
and on the World Wide Web. Furthermore, the explosion in communications
and computer technology, a new commitment to collections information in
the museum profession and new sources of funding, such as the European
Community and the Millennium Fund, are making the goal of extensive
public access to museum collections seem achievable for the first time.

The principal aim of this meeting is to review current and potential
developments in the public presentation of information concerning the
materials on show (and also those that it may not be possible to show).
It will
be particularly concerned with non-textual materials, artefacts,
pictures and models, but will also refer to the use of standards such as
Z39.50 and SGML.

Speakers concerned with the major collections will present their current
work and future plans on making their material available to an ever
expanding community of interest. In addition, there will be
presentations on broader aspects, such as intellectual property rights
and marketing.
