Position:             Exhibit Technician

Salary:               $22,819 per year (starting)

Location:             Lyndon Baines Johnson Library & Museum
                      Austin, Texas

MAJOR DUTIES:  Under the direction of the Exhibit Specialist, the Exhibit
Technician will assist with the design, fabrication and maintenance of
museum exhibits pertaining to the life of President Lyndon Baines Johnson.
Assists with development and construction of small-scale layouts.  Helps
with designs, selecting materials, colors and processes.  Works with hand
and power tools cutting panels and framing edges.  Paints by brush and
spray.  Fabricates special mounting devices, special lighting effects,
audio-visual and other visitor-operated dispalys.  Assists with the
installation of completed exhibits, erecting cases, mounting wall panels,
installing special lighting and fitting exhibits in cases.  Works with the
Curator in the development of computer-generated exhibit graphics and labels
using Adobe Photoshop, Quark Express and Adobe Illustrator.  Works closely
with contractors to produce exhibit graphics.  Assists in the assessmsnt of
audience reaction to exhibits and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:  BFA or BA in Graphic Design, Art or Museum Studies
and 1 year of specialized experience preferred.  Specialized experience is
experience in the actual type of work for which this application is made.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Work will sometimes be performed in cramped area, on
temporary platforms and overheads.  Frequently lifts and carry items
weighing up to 45 pounds.  May occasionally lift heavier items with
assistence.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work environment varies from office-like conditions
to condidtions of wood-working machine shop.  May occasionally work outside;
but most often works in gallery and exhibit areas.

EVALUATION OF CANDIDATE:  A successful candidate should have the following
knowledge, skills and abilities:  Skills in the installation, design and
development of exhibit structures.  Skills in the fabrication of mounting
devices.  Knowledge of lighting effects.  Proficient in the use of MAC and
PC computers and in the operation of Adobe Photoshop, Quark Express, Adobe
Illustrator, as well as scanners and other related computer hardware.
Knowledge of AutoCAD and other design software is a plus.  Ability to use
power and hand tools.  Ability to work with and convey information to
others.  Possess excellent written and communication skills.
