Responses to your questions:
1.) I found my first full-time professional museum position (not counting internships) in the AAM's AVISO (back then, in the Bronze Age, it was called the AAM Bulletin). I am sure I got hired because I was the only "generalist" who applied for the job. It was a small museum.......and they needed a "generalist" with hands-on skills.
2.) The best part of my job is learning something new each and every day; and hopefully, in-turn, teaching something new and developing junior members of the staff.
3.) Books are OK but I learn the most from other people. Just ask them the right questions and listen. With regards to conferences, I don't learn much from the speakers and programs, ......however, I do learn much from meeting the conference attendees (the folks sitting in the audience), during and after the conference's social events. Be sure to get their business cards and give them a call when you want to seek their advice. But keep the questions short and to the point. I have learned more at regional, rather than national conferences. Over the past 30 years I have noticed that the more innovative and cost-effective programs and exhibits are being done by the smaller and medium-sized institutions (often smaller institutions can change direction more easily, and are more "nimble" on their feet than larger organizations). Get to know the people from those types of institutions.
I hope this helps,

This message is from a trying to get there..but not
yet there.
1. I would like to know how my mentor got his/her
first museum job.
2. I would like to know what he/she thinks is the most
rewarding part of his/her job and what is the worst
part.
3. Finally, I would like to know what my mentor does
to improve at his/her job. That is, does he or she
think that reading books about his/her area is most
important, if so, what books? Does my mentor attend
conferences and if so which ones have been more
helpful.
Thank you Indigo Nights. It is nice to get back on
topic.
