CURATORSHIP AND COMMUNITY
Distance offering
As museums seek to be more engaged with the diverse communities they serve and to the cultures they study and interpret, curators are challenged to redefine the ways in which they assemble and share collections, shape exhibitions, communicate information, and nurture reciprocal partnerships with external groups. This course examines the history, attitudes, knowledge, and skills that underlie this shift in curatorial role and practice.

DEVELOPING AND MANAGING CULTURAL CENTRES

Cultural centres have emerged worldwide in recent years to encompass traditional museum functions within a wider community-driven mandate that also nurtures the preservation of traditional knowledge, language, folklore, and craft, that addresses cultural issues, and that promotes vibrant contemporary cultural and artistic interactions. This new immersion course examines the nature of cultural centres, their roles in facilitating community cultural preservation and development, and the lessons they hold for museums seeking to transform their connections with communities.
Dates: February 10-13, 2003, with preparatory assignment

MANAGING NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS
Immersion offering at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa
The diverse, complex, often delicate nature of natural history collections-and the increasingly vital roles they play in environmental research and public education-create special challenges for collections managers and curators. This course explores current principles and practices in the management of natural history collections, and discusses the impacts of new technologies, diminished resources, and pressures for increased accountability, relevance, and access.
Dates: February 24-March 1, 2003, with preparatory assignment

TIMELINESS: A consideration of the role of museums in current issues
Facilitated Workshop at Dunsmuir Lodge, Victoria, BC
As museums seek to be more broadly relevant to communities, our capacity to respond to contemporary events and issues in a "timely" manner raises fascinating, often challenging, questions? This three-day workshop/retreat/think-tank/gathering provides an opportunity for senior museum managers to consider these timely questions in the context of their own institutions and communities. Join colleagues and resource people in a thought-provoking and memorable setting to analyze the issues, explore factors for success, and develop strategies to strengthen your museum's capacity to be timely.
Dates: April 3-5, 2003
