1. EDITOR CUM SECRETARY GENERAL'S GREETINGS

Dear ICOM members, 

I am very pleased to inform you that the ICOM 2004 SEOUL Organising
Committee will be able to send you an E-Newsletter via ICOM-L. The
Organising Committee hopes to make better communication between our staffs
and members of ICOM. This Newsletter is also being expected you to deliver
news of the ICOM 2004 SEOUL Organising Committee and valuable information of
the museums and culture of Korea. Your comments and opinions in every aspect
are most welcome. 

Thanks for your special concerns and participation of the meeting in Seoul. 

I am looking forward to meeting you in Seoul, the first city of ICOM General
Conference in Asia.

2. NEWS 

* The Korea Post, the Korean Government's agency will issue a postage-stamp
in commemoration of the 20th General Conference & the 21st General Assembly
in Seoul, 2004. The commemorative stamp will be available for sale in
September before the ICOM 2004 SEOUL. 



3. INFORMATION BOARD 

* The ICOM 2004 SEOUL Organising Committee is recruiting volunteers for the
ICOM 2004 SEOUL. The first group of the volunteers will be selected in
March, and will help the Organising Committee and the Korean liaisons for
International Committees in preparation of the ICOM 2004 SEOUL. More
applications for volunteering will keep open to the public until the end of
May. 

* On-line registration will be ready soon as the Organising Committee is
testing the technical stability. 



4. PROGRAMMES AND MEETINGS

* The Organising Committee has set up a Sub-Committee for Events and
Programmes, which will present cultural events during the ICOM 2004 SEOUL.
Taking the conference theme "Museums and Intangible Heritage" seriously into
account, the Organising Committee has invited Korea's well-known experts to
the Sub-Committee that is responsible for planning the cultural events. 

* The cultural events during the ICOM 2004 SEOUL include presentations and
performances of intangible heritage in the Welcome Reception (2nd October),
the Opening Event and Gala Dinner (3rd October) and the Farewell Party (8th
October). In addition, presentations and performances on intangible heritage
will be made during the Keynote Sessions and the Forum Discussion whose
speakers' subjects can be better projected by them. 

* The Events and Programmes Committee is also drawing up further cultural
events on 4th, 5th and 6th, October, which are titled on "The Night of
Cultural Events". They will start at 7:30 pm during those three days in COEX
the main venue. They will provide attendees with good opportunities to
experience unique intangible heritages. Therefore, the Organising Committee
would like to recommend that the International Committees prepare their
programmes in order to be able to enjoy the Nights of Cultural Events. 

* Concurrent Sessions will be organised from 4th to 6th, October. The themes
of them are respectively as follows: 

a. Museums and Living Heritage 
b. Protection of Cultural Heritage 
c. Digital Heritage and the Future Museum

In particular, ICME and its Korean liaison institution, the National Folk
Museum of Korea are to be collaborated with the Organising Committee
preparing the Session on "Museums and Living Heritage". ICMS and its Korean
liaison are also working jointly with the Organising Committee to organise
the "Protection of Cultural Heritage" Session. 



5. MUSEUMS IN KOREA

6. PEOPLE 

* Mr. Per B. Rekdal (President of ICME) and Mr. Daniel Winfree Papuga
(Secretary of ICME) visited Seoul from 26th February to 1st March, 2004.
They had a meeting with staffs of the National Folk Museum of Korea, the
Korean liaison institution for ICME, concerning preparation of the ICME
meeting during the ICOM 2004 SEOUL. They were also warmly welcomed by the
ICOM 2004 SEOUL Organising Committee on their third day in Seoul, and met
with some Executive Members of the Organising Committee. 



7. TOUR POINTS 

* Several kinds of the day tour programmes will be available for
participants on 7th October. In particular, the War Memorial of Korea will
be organising a day tour on that day for which participants can visit the
Joint Security Area (JSA) and the De-Militarised Zone (DMZ).
