About the congress

ICOMAM-ICDAD Congress in 2015 promises to be an exceptional event. It will be held in Krakow and Warsaw, Poland, on 15th-20th September. For the first time in the history the ICOMAM and ICDAD will meet and work together. This will be also the first congress of ICOMAM organized in Poland, from the time when IAMAM visited the country nearly 40 years ago in 1978, and first ICDAD meeting in Poland since 1993.

Combined Congress ICOMAM and ICDAD will be held in the former capital of the Kingdom of Poland, Krakow, a city of more than 1000 years of tradition, which in the Renaissance played an important role in the culture and politics of the region, being located at the crossroads of culture of Italy, Germany and Oriental influences flowing in from Turkey and Persia. Selection of Krakow is not accidental. It is in this historic town that are located some of the most interesting collections of old weapons, uniforms and the decorative arts in Poland. It is also here where is the cradle of modern Polish museums and museology.

This year’s the conference will be held under the title: “Ambassadors of dialogue” and will discuss the role of the diplomatic gifts, works of arts and crafts and other artifacts in intercultural exchange.

The National Museum in Krakow

Congress will be hosted by the National Museum in Krakow, the oldest National Museum and arguably the biggest museum on Polish soil. This institution, created for Polish art, is now in the possession of one of the best and largest collections of old weapons and decorative arts in Poland. The most important objects since 1991 has been presented at the permanent exhibition "Arms and uniforms in Poland" and “Decorative Arts in Poland”, containing approx. 2,000 and 4,000 exhibits respectively, dated from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. This collection perfectly complements with other museum collections that will be of interest to the Congress.

Museums in Krakow

One of the most important is Princes Czartoryski Museum with the famous “Lady with Hermine” painted by Leonardo da Vinci, also the oldest Polish public museum that after many storms of the history found its safe harbour in Krakow. Another highlight will be the Royal Wawel Castle collection

Welcome to Krakow!

the seat of Polish kings with the armoury and the collection of Oriental art. Enthusiasts and professionals involved in the later period will certainly feel comfortable in the newly opened museums: Museum of the Home Army, dedicated to the biggest underground army in Europe operating under the occupation of Nazi Germany, and the Museum – Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, known for the Oscar winning film "The Schindler's List" by Steven Spielberg, showing Krakow during the World War II. It is worth mentioning that here is also located the Polish Aviation Museum, having in its collection unique aircrafts, as well as Museums containing smaller but interesting collections: The Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, the Archaeological Museum, Museum of Ethnography, Cricoteca (dedicated to Tadeusz Kantor) and least but not last MOCAK – Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow dedicated to modern art and design.

The best city in Europe 2014!

But the congress will not only live for museums through these few days spent in the royal city of Krakow. The city is famous for its unique atmosphere, captivating the tourists with historic, preserved intact old town, the Jewish district of Kazimierz, beautiful interiors of churches, and unique in the world, socialist realist architecture of Nowa Huta district, which was supposed to be in the intentions of the builders the competition for Krakow, but on the contrary it is currently one of its main highlights.

Numerous tourist attractions and the unique charm of the city resulted in the fact that Krakow was declared the best tourist city in Europe in 2014 by the portals "Which!" (www.which.co.uk<http://www.which.co.uk>) and "Zoover" (www.zoover.com<http://www.zoover.com>). The unique character of the city is also proved by the fact that in the poll on the 7 wonders of Poland published in 2007, the locations associated with the city occupied as much as 3 positions. One of the Polish "wonders", also inscribed on the UNESCO list is the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It is there, in a unique atmosphere of salt caves, 130 meters underground, where the festive "welcome dinner" is planned for the members and guests of the ICOM Committees.

“The Ottoman Orient in Renaissance Art”

The highlight of the congress will be the exhibition "Ottoman Orient in the Renaissance Art", organized jointly with the Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels, where you will be able to see the works of, among others, Gentile Bellini, Hans Memling, Albrecht Dürer, Tintoretto, Lorenzo Lotto and many others. The exhibition lights the dynamic yet often ambiguous appeal that the Middle East exerted on Western and Central European artists and craftsmen. The first opening will be held in Brussels on 27th February and after 4 months the exhibition will be presented in the National Museum in Krakow (26 June-27 September 2015).

Post-conference Tour, Warsaw 2014

The Polish capital, Warsaw, will compete in 2015 with the charms of Krakow, to which participants will go to the post-conference tour. The organization of this part of the congress will be within the obligation of the Museum of the Polish Army, the largest military museum in Poland. The agenda will include older and newest museums opened in recent years.
