ICOM-NATHIST - Annual meeting 2006 in Wellington (New Zealand)
November 27-30

Call for papers / Registration form / Hotel information

Our main topics for the annual meeting are:

1) Museums as guarantees for sustainable development

Museums have an important role in the sustainable development of society,
building an understanding and appreciation of culture through their
narratives and the heritage they protect. This session will focus on
museums' societal contribution through interpretation, repatriation, and
intangible natural heritage. It will include story-telling, environmental
education, repatriation of cultural artefacts such as toi moko, and
protection of world heritage.

2) Museums and Exhibitions: the role of historic taxidermy

Taxidermy and the habitat groups within which they are displayed, is the
public face of the three-dimensional biodiversity archives held by Natural
History Museums.
In addition to their educational role, they frequently also represent a
broader cultural and artistic heritage. This session will launch the work of
the ICOM-NATHIST working group on the ART of TAXIDERMY and its cultural
heritage, bringing the project, to help preserve and protect historic
taxidermy and habitat groups (dioramas), to a wider public awareness.

3) Museums and Universal Heritage

Natural history museums play a vital role in preserving the world's natural
heritage. In a period of extinction, knowledge about species, ranges,
habitats and ecological demands has become imperative. Therefore,
collection, acquisition and conservation combined with basic research are
still fundamental, even if not always highly valued. Communication and
dialogue with visitors are becoming increasingly important because public
awareness and understanding are essential to create the political will that
protects nature.

The task of preserving intangible natural heritage by informing the creation
of protected areas and nature reserves is about to turn out an extraordinary
challenge. In the 21st century, a time of globalisation and increasing
complexity, none of these aims will be achieved without fundamental
knowledge of economic principles or without sufficient management and
leadership tools.

Come together (November 26)
For all participants which arrive early we will meet in the evening Nov 26.
Place and time will be indicated later. For those coming earlier than the

ideas for additional activities will be available soon.

Excursion day (November 30)
We will visit Karori Wild Life Sanctuary and/or Matiu/Somes Island, both
right in Wellington. In case of rain, alternative activities will be
planned.,.

Karori Wildlife Sanctuary
It is a safe haven for endangered native birds and other wildlife, located
minutes from downtown Wellington. A unique predator proof fence surrounds
the Sanctuary, protecting the wildlife and ensuring the forest regenerates
to its former glory. This world-first conservation attraction is an
inspiring place to visit and learn about New Zealand's unique wildlife.
Discover New Zealand as it was-today.

Matiu/Somes Island
Located in Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington Harbour, Matiu/Somes Island is a
tranquil retreat for wildlife and visitors alike. Matiu/Somes Island. Maori
have occupied this island for generations.
Ship rats and other pests were eradicated from the island in the late 1980s.
Since that time, the island has become a sanctuary for native plants, birds,
reptiles and invertebrates. For this reason, it is important that all
visitors check bags at the Whare Kiore upon their arrival, to help keep
Matiu/Somes free of pests.
