Dear Colleagues,
From the very beginning, ICOM was monitoring closely the Gaza war and its effect on museums. Thanks to the assistance of ICOM "Disaster Relief for Museums Task Force" chaired by Dr. Thomas Schuler, the Geneva City Museum, Mr. Khoudary and the UNESCO office in Ramallah, we were able to assess the situation quickly and precisely.
The first international damage assessment (UNESCO 1st/2nd February), the continuous information by the Geneva museum and the pictures provided by Mr. Khoudary lead us - quite unexpectedly - to an relieving result: Despite of the position of the buildings at the northern Gaza front line, the museum and the collection depot did not suffer substantial damage.
As far as we can judge at the moment, no foreign assistance is needed.

Depuis le début du conflit, l'ICOM a surveillé de près la guerre dans la Bande de Gaza et ses effets sur les musées. Grâce au groupe d'intervention de l'ICOM de secours aux musées en cas de catastrophe présidé par Thomas Schuler, au Musée de La ville de Genève, à M. Khoudary et au bureau de l'UNESCO de Ramallah nous avons pu évaluer la situation de manière rapide et précise.
Lors de la première évaluation internationale des dégâts (UNESCO 1er et 2 février 2009), le musée de Genève a transmis les informations et M. Khoudary les images, nous menant - de façon inattendue - à un vrai soulagement : malgré la position des bâtiments sur la première ligne de la Bande de Gaza du nord, le musée et le dépôt des collections n'ont pas subi de dégâts substantiels.
A l'heure actuelle, aucune aide étrangère n'est nécessaire.
