NEWS
The First Lady of Korea, Mrs. Yangsook Kwon, will give a speech at the
Opening Ceremony as the Honorary Chairperson of ICOM 2004 General
Conference.

The Preliminary Programme was printed in 5 languages (Korean, English,
French, Chinese, and Japanese) and sent out to the ICOM members.

The Organizing Committee of ICOM 2004 Seoul will invite professionals from
museums and cultural institutions of North Korea to the General Conference.
Among possible guests are Mr. S.H KIM, the Director of Chosun History Museum
and Mr. C.K. HAN, the Director of Chosun Museum of Fine Arts in Pyoungyang.



PROGRAMMES AND MEETINGS
The Advisory Committee for ICOM 2004 Seoul was formed in April and the
former Prime Minister, Mr. Susung LEE, accepted to be the Chairperson for
the Committee.


American Association of Museums had its 98th Annual Meeting in New Orleans
from May 5th to 11th. Mr. Chong-Pil CHOE, the Vice Chairperson of the
Organizing Committee had a presentation concerning the significance and
current preparatory status of ICOM 2004 Seoul at the ICOM/AAM luncheon.


International Forum of Museum Directors was held in Beijing last May.  Mr.
Byung-Mo KIM, the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee was there with Mr.
Jacque Perot, ICOM President and gave a presentation to promote ICOM 2004
for the Chinese museum professionals


PEOPLE

Mr. Hans Manneby, the Chairperson of ICR visited Korea in May by the
invitation of Dr. Chong-Sun RHI, the Director of Gyeonggi Provincial Museum.
During his stay in Seoul and Gyeonggi Povince he has discussed the programs
for ICR meetings and also gave a lecture at the Association of Gyeonggi
Provincial Museums Conference about Swedish museums.

Mr. Nasu, the Director of Osaka Natural History Museum visited Korea by the
invitation of Mr. Bae, Kidong, the Secretary General of ICOM 2004 Seoul
Organizing Committee. Mr. Nasu is expected to encourage museums in Osaka to
participate in ICOM 2004 Seoul.

NEWS
As of this writing, the Organizing Committee has processed more than 634
registrations including accompanying persons from 79 countries. Russia has
the most delegations of 97 members and 67 members have shown interests to
attend CECA meetings among the International Committee programs.

PROGRAMMES AND MEETINGS
Mr. Manus Brinkman, Secretary General and Ms. Eloisa Zell, Membership
Officer visited Seoul to go over the programmes for the General Conference
from June 17th to 21st.

The Korean delegation attended the Japanese Association of Museums meetings
to promote ICOM 2004 Seoul from June 22nd and 24th.

MUSEUMS IN KOREA
Samsung Art Museum has moved its office to a new site near Mt. Namsan in
Seoul.  The newly constructed museum has designed by world renowned
architects, Mario Botta, Rem Koolhass and Jean Nouvel.  The museum will open
its new doors to ICOM members in October.

 The Horim Museum (Director Oh, Yoonsun), one of the best private
collections of fine arts in Korea, opened a special exhibition of Buncheong
porcelains of early Chosun Dynasty on July 9th for commemorating ICOM 2004.
Interesting participants of the ICOM 2004 will be able to see this special
exhibit in this coming October.

PEOPLE
Prof. P. Stanbury, the Chairman of UMAC, is in Korea to finalize the
programs with Korean Association of University Museums. During his stay from
July 11th to 16th, he will visit several university museums in Seoul and
Daegu and historical sites in Gyoungju.
