This interesting as well as adventurous conference, that will start in Kristiansand and end in Vest-Agder County, is co-hosted by ICOM Norway and will explore the theme "Changing Tastes: Local Gastronomy & Regional Museums." ICR believes that regional museums excel at bringing local cooking habits to the forefront and sharing rich sources of tangible and intangible culinary heritage with their visitors and researchers. Papers dealing with any aspects of museum involvement in presenting and preserving food and drink traditions are welcome.



International keynote speakers will set the context for discussions and exchange of experiences through theoretical and practice-based presentations.

ICR members and colleagues are invited to participate in this conference that will combine diverse topics, a variety of museum visits and workshops and the ambient atmosphere of our host country. Delegates may also extend their stay and join a promising post-conference tour. Come and join us!

CALL FOR PAPERS



Theme: CHANGING TASTES - LOCAL GASTRONOMY AND REGIONAL MUSEUMS.  



Every region has developed distinctive patterns of eating and drinking in response to the natural resources available in its physical environment.  However, rapid development, globalisation and international fast food are rapidly overtaking local dishes, eating houses and family food practices.   Nevertheless movements such as "Slow Food" are reclaiming locally grown ingredients and traditional recipes, while the popularity of television cooking programmes and well-researched cookery books show that public interest in regional foods and drink is strong.  ICR suggests that regional museums can add new dimensions to our understandings of the inventiveness of cooks, gardeners, fishermen, farmers and hunter-gatherers across time and across cultures.  Almost every museum holds some food-related material in their collections: still-life paintings, farm tractors, kitchen utensils, plant and animal specimens, traditional table textiles, cookbooks, historic photographs recording wedding feasts, fish nets used by indigenous cultures and pottery from archaeological contexts.  



Regional museums document, collect, interpret and present all aspects of life in their regions, including the vital activities around foodways. How can museums best share their rich resources of tangible and intangible gastronomic heritage with their many visitors and researchers?  



Papers can explore any aspects of museum involvement in presenting and preserving food and drink traditions, including (but not limited to) museums' contributions to recording the cultivation and harvesting of local crops, and the storage, preservation and preparation of food stuffs; researching and reviving local dishes and heritage plants; indigenous knowledge relating to traditional collecting of food resources; documenting changes in food tastes and modes of consumption influenced by immigration or local and national movements; the politics of food; the material culture of food and drink; conservation challenges in collecting food products; interpreting food production in domestic and industrial settings, etc.  



Proposals are welcome addressing questions such as the role of museums in supporting the revival and promotion of regional gastronomy; the challenges of presenting local food history while complying with health, safety and hygiene regulations; effective partnering with culinary tourism initiatives and dealing with controversial topics such as obesity, famine, food shortages and/or alcoholism.



ICR is looking for papers dealing with these and other questions that can help us be creative in the ways our museums address the history and culture of food production and consumption. We are looking for examples of good practice, successful exhibitions, events and educational activities using museum collections and local talent.

Papers on the topic in general - maximum 15 minutes. 

Case studies with examples from museums and training programs - maximum 10 minutes. 

Presentations must not exceed given time limit.



The Programme Committee will respond by June 1, 2011. After the proposal is accepted, the complete text is due August 15, 2011. Papers should be submitted as a Microsoft word document with photos, tables and charts as separate attachments (adding any technical needs for your presentation)

CONFERENCE FEE



400 Euros/450 Euros must be paid at the latest July 15th, 2011 and includes participation in conference sessions, excursions, lunches, coffee breaks, conference material and evening programme, 2 night’s lodging at hotel in Farsund, two dinners and two breakfasts.

The accommodation in Farsund is included in the fee and is booked by the Norwegian Organizing Committee but the fee has to be paid in order to secure the booking. We strongly advise all the participants to book as soon as possible.

ICR LAUNCHES A GRANT FOR YOUNG MEMBERS OF ICOM



To encourage young colleagues to participate in ICR activities, we announce a Travel Grant of five hundred euros (500 €) for young members of ICOM who want to take part in the 49th ICR Annual Conferences in 2011.



Applicants must be 



1. Less than 35 years old, and; 

2. An Individual member of ICOM for a minimum of 1 year as of the grant application date; and

3. Actively working in a Museum for a minimum of 2 years as of the application date. 



The awardee is required to



4. Give a ten-minute presentation on the conference theme at the Annual Conference.

5. Write a paper relating to the presentation for publication.   

6. Write a report about the Annual Conference for publication in the ICR Newsletter & website



Note that the presentation, paper and report must be in English.



Preference will be given to applicants who are individual members of ICR who are employees of regional museums.  



To apply, send a C.V. with a cover letter stating explaining why you wish to attend the 2011 ICR conference in Norway, along with the title and abstract of your proposed presentation.
