The International Council of African Museums (AFRICOM) seeks an
executive director

In October 1999, the International Council of African Museums,
AFRICOM, was set up as an NGO.

AFRICOM has the following mission and objectives.

Mission:

AFRICOM seeks to contribute to the positive development of
African societies by encouraging the role of museums as
generators of culture and as agents of cultural cohesion.

The mission of AFRICOM shall be to develop museum policies and
networking on a continental and regional level, focusing on the
cohesion of cultures beyond geographical and linguistic barriers.

Objectives:

(a) Promote the development of museums and museum-related
institutions in Africa in the context of global development;

(b) Promote the development of professions on which museum
activities are built;

(c) Strengthen the collaboration and co-operation among museums
and museum professionals in Africa, and develop exchanges with
museum professionals abroad;

(d) Promote the participation of all components of the society in
the protection and enhancement of cultural and natural heritage

(e) Fight against the illicit traffic of African heritage;

(f) Establish and maintain an autonomous institution to achieve
these objectives.

AFRICOM seeks an executive director to manage its headquarters established
in Nairobi (Kenya).

Tasks:

The Executive Director of AFRICOM is responsible to the Board of
Directors for:

* The administration of AFRICOM, and the operations of the
Secretariat;

        - The effective co-ordination of all the programmes
operated by AFRICOM and shall take all necessary measures to
ensure their efficient implementation;

        - The management of the day-to-day activities of the
Secretariat. More particularly, the executive director is
responsible for:

* Providing to the members of AFRICOM services as specified in
the statutes of the organisation;

* Providing secretarial services to the General Assembly, to the
meetings of the Board of Directors, and to the elections of the
President and of the Treasurer of the Board of Directors of
AFRICOM;

* Providing the logistics and all the required services to all
the meetings and elections to be held at the General Assembly of
AFRICOM;

* Co-ordinating and efficiently supervising the staff of the
Secretariat;

* Preparing, planning, implementing, evaluating and reporting on
AFRICOM's programme of activities approved by the General
Assembly of AFRICOM;

* Carrying out, under the Treasurer's direction, the financial
operations of AFRICOM, including the payment of all accounts, the
keeping of appropriate records, and the preparation of proper
financial statements;

* Facilitating the work of all the committees set up by AFRICOM

* Any other duties that may be assigned by the Board of Directors
of AFRICOM, in accordance with the mission and the statutes of
AFRICOM.

Experience

1. Management:

* Management position in a cultural or natural heritage
institution or department for at least 3 years.

* Proven experience in long term planning, budgeting, proposal
development and write up, staff management, reporting, project
co-ordination

2. Fund raising:

Proven experience in fund raising: donor identification, donor
liaison, marketing.

3. Cultural / Natural heritage
Broad knowledge of cultural or natural heritage issues.

4. Languages: Full proficiency in French and English. Knowledge of
Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish will be an advantage.

5. Good communication skills.

6. Age limit: 55 years

Qualification: minimum Master degree or equivalent in human /
social sciences, museum studies, natural / environmental
sciences.

Preference will be given to equally qualified African candidates.

Salary and benefits. Salary: 20,000US$ per year. Benefits:
housing allowance, medical insurance, terminal benefits (15% of
annual salary), annual leave (30 days). Relocation allowance.

Location: the position will be based at AFRICOM's headquarters in
Nairobi (Kenya).
