IC MEMO Seminar in Shanghai

On November 9, the IC MEMO Board will hold a seminar entitled “Shanghai – Shelter of Jewish Refugees in 1933 – 1945“ during the ICOM Congress in Shanghai. It will spotlight the fates of Jews from many European countries, which gradually fell under the yoke of Hitler’s National Socialist regime. The anti-Jewish policy pursued by Hitlerite Germany eventually led to the genocide of European Jewry, later generally known under its English term Holocaust or the Hebrew word Shoah. At that time, Shanghai represented an important escape route and a temporary home to a unique community of refugees who enjoyed considerable support from the local inhabitants. The seminar is intended to trace the history of this community, as seen by well-known international experts coming both from the countries of origin of those Jewish refugees and from the host country. We are also trying to arrange the attendance of a direct participant in the events under scrutiny from the ranks of Jewish refugees. A substantial part of the seminar, whose definitive programme will be published this coming October, will also be devoted to the issue of the status of monuments connected with the history of the period under review, and with the history of the Shanghai ghetto in a wider sense, as well as plans for their further maintenance and use.
As a follow-up to the seminar, an excursion will be held on November 10 to the sites associated with the history of the ghetto, and a visit to the Museum of Jewish Refugees in Shanghai.
Since the ICOM Congress will be attended only by a limited number of IC MEMO members, we will very much welcome attendance by the members of the other international committees and ICOM Congress delegates. Naturally, you can put your name down for your own presentation relating to the topic of the seminar. Kindly address your entries, suggestions and any queries you may have to the Chair of the Board or to the IC MEMO Secretary. We would like to add that your address at the seminar is not a precondition for your participation; we will gladly welcome any guest, and we are looking forward to receiving your preliminary information expressing your interest in attending the seminar.

Vojtech Blodig
IC MEMO Chair

Norbert Haase

IC MEMO Secretary/Treasurer
